The “blessing” system feels nice and ties in well with the story and characters, and while I might wish that elemental vulnerabilities played slightly more of a role than they do, there’s plenty of meaningful decisions to make both during equipping your party and during combat, and most battles have story-specific flavour and unique challenges to deal with. Mechanics are largely RPG-standard, but with enough added flavour and complexity to keep it fresh and interesting. The game is even fairly forgiving about saving, allowing saving almost everywhere outside of an active battle. No endless screen transitions here! The only engine-related drawback I’ve found is the lack of a rollback, so I have to go to the log if I accidentally skip some dialogue. Outside of the (excellent) combat segments, scenes and dialogue are smooth, the game window is nice and large, there’s a skip button that goes quite quickly if needed, and wandering around is limited to only specific, nicely contained areas. I generally prefer RenPY to RPG-maker, but this feels like a game that is capitalising very well on RPG-maker’s strengths in combat presentation, management, and mechanics.
